Last Light - Valle Chacabuco, Aysén

20240415 - After returning to Cochrane, a few days later we ventured into the park for one last evening together.

Where we stopped was a significant spot. A friend's dad was born and grew up here. My own father stood here a month earlier. He showed us the grasses and told us their names. These familiar varietals were the same that he used to feed sheep back home, half a world away.

This was also the spot that Kris and Doug Tompkins camped when she had a strong moment of connection to the Valle. At that point she knew, she had to try and protect this landscape. Ultimately, culminating in the creation of the National Park.

It was a fitting spot to stop at in the final light of the day. I wanted to see it one last time before returning north, back home. Half a world away, in a different direction.
