Fiords of Puyuhuapi
Next time you are in a forest sit still. If you wait long enough and be attentive, the forest will give you gifts. Your presence alters a forest, the sounds change and much becomes invisible. But if you sit in the stillness and wait, songs will return and creatures, cautious as they were, will become curious.
Out in the fiords of Puyuhuapi, the Patagonian rainforests hold an abundance of life. My last morning there I had woken early and gone to hike out into the bush, to sit still and listen. Unusual for me, normally it’s about hiking for views, hiking for miles, hiking for ego or some other thing. Never have I hiked for sounds. Never have I hiked to hear the birds and breeze and bugs and ocean. But I should.
